Ayo Dosunmu, PG, Illinois
The Lakers are not afraid to make moves in the 2nd round if they feel they can land a player they believe could be an impact for them. They have bought picks previously in the past, most famously Jordan Clarkson. If the right talent falls to the purple and gold in the middle of the second round, they have zero fear about making that deal. Handing out the money, and getting the player they want.
In this instance, Ayo Dosunmu could be that player. Dosunmu is not a household name by any stretch of the imagination, he isn’t highly touted as a prospect within this class and didn’t go to a powerhouse college program. But you only need to look at Dosunmu play to see that there is potential for him to be a good NBA player.
When it comes to size, at 6″5, he offers great length at the point guard position. When it comes to his game, there are striking similarities to New Orleans Pelicans point guard Jrue Holiday. Both excel at quarterbacking an offense, both can freeze their defenders with dribble moves and get to the rim, and both use their size well when it comes to defending their man.
Dosunmu is very much a work in progress but there is an exciting upside in this young man. He does appear to suffer from “Jordan Clarkson syndrome” though. He can look like an all-star one minute, and the next you might not even remember he is in the game.
With consistent coaching at the highest level and having teammates such as LeBron James, Anthony Davis, Danny Green, and Avery Bradley, Dosunmu might be able to consistently harness his ability. If he can do that, the purple and gold will have landed themselves a very useful player moving forward.
He’s quite far from being the finished product but he’s an exciting prospect who just needs the right coaching and mentors to be a solid player.
He’s an extremely exciting prospect. If given time like Talen Horton-Tucker, to develop in the G-League, work on his craft, clean up his jump shot, and focus on playing more consistently, he has all the potential to be a starting-caliber point guard with his ceiling being an all-star.
