Cassius Stanley, Shooting Guard, Duke

It is easy to see why Duke recruited Cassius Stanley to be part of their program.

Coming off the back of Zion Williamson, Coach K brought in Stanley, another player who is an uber-athlete and who can also jump out of the gym.

Unfortunately for Coach K and Duke, Cassius Stanley isn’t Zion Williamson. That is not a slight to the young man, Zion is a unicorn.

Cassius Stanley entered his freshman season with Duke and while he wasn’t bad by any stretch of the imagination, he simply didn’t seem to live up to the hype. Don’t get it twisted, Stanley has world-class traits that if used correctly will have him being a starter sooner rather than later.

The worrying thing about Stanley. In a Duke team which compared to years previous, was weak, Stanley was the 3rd best player on the team. While this can be put down to him being a freshman, Stanley isn’t exactly young, turning 21 in August. Teams might look at him and wonder if he’s just going to be a dunker in the league and not much else.

While Stanley does have the athleticism to be one of the games better dunkers, he does have some traits that will get him paid. He’s explosive in transition with the ball in his hands, capable of going coast to coast, he’ll get easy baskets in the NBA if teams disrespect him.

While not known to be an elite steal man, Stanley has a knack for snatching the ball and punishing teams who switch off for even a second. He measured in the 93rd percentile as a catch and shoot finisher last season. This could be incredibly useful to the Lakers, as with LeBron James and Anthony Davis on the floor, you can expect for Stanley to be spotting up waiting for the ball to hit his hands.

If Cassius Stanley can get everything working together, his upside is an All-Star. He has the athletic ability and length to contribute early for a team but if he doesn’t step up and stand out in weak NBA draft class then how can he be expected to stand out in a league full of college stars?
