Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reported recently that Darren Collison would remain retired and not enter the free agency market. This leads the Los Angeles Lakers to look towards other buyout options as they look to better their roster.

One name that has popped up is Dion Waiters. He was recently waived by the Memphis Grizzlies, after being traded there by the Miami Heat in the deal involving Andre Iguodala.

Though a controversial figure, Waiters is a dynamic player, who might not address all of the Lakers concerns, but could definitely be a help to the team.

Defensively, Waiters is not ideal. Standing at just 6-foot-3, he does not possess the size that the Lakers are looking for to guard a wing. However, he can definitely help with the offensive struggles that the team has at times.

He possesses the ability to knock down the 3-ball, and finish in the paint. His ability to create his own shot on broken plays is desirable also. Although he can be inconsistent, the nights in which he is able to knock down his shots could make him a real difference maker. Is Waiters worth taking a punt on?

One interesting statistic to look at is per Basketball Reference. Waiters hits 52% of his left side corner 3-point shots. Pair this with Kyle Kuzma‘s 49% efficiency rating on the right side corner, and we can see the possibility for both players to make a scary duo from that standpoint.

Off-the-court Waiters does host problems. He has only played 3 games this season, and one of the main reasons for that is due to his increasingly evident problem of staying away from using recreational drugs. Whether this remains an issue or not is a major concern with acquiring Waiters, as if he cannot address, he will not be able to contribute to the team.

But the signing of Dion Waiters could work out well. He is capable of providing some explosion off the bench and drain shots when he needs to. He would most likely be an improvement for the team.

If productive, he could assist in the resting of LeBron James and Anthony Davis, which would probably be the main reason for his acquisition. Come playoff time, it is unlikely that Waiters receives many minutes, so as a temporary addition to help with the regular decision, he should definitely be considered.
